From Beth Stokes, Humanist Celebrant:

Friday, January 31st, I will hold a brief (~15 minute) non-religious, ecological grief ceremony on Cambridge Common. Inspired by Iceland’s funeral for a glacier last August, my goal is to honor species driven to extinction and individual climate martyrs. My hope is that passers-by and attendees will find a welcome place to experience their feelings of ecological grief and to be with each other.

There will be some poetry, a reading of names of those killed, and encouragement toward renewed interconnectedness and hope. But funerals are sinuous things anyway, changing with the participation of the mourners, so I don’t know exactly what it will look like.

If you would like to join, I’d love to see your friendly face there and find solace in gathering together.

Also, just a note that this is not something sanctioned or held on behalf of any organization. It’s something I feel personally moved to do with my own grief and love for the Earth.

In peace,

Beth
